Work experience? But wait you have a degree, right?

Updated: Jun 30, 2020

Having already completed an undergraduate degree in your chosen field, undertaking an unpaid work experience can feel almost like a step back. As part of my master’s degree I was tasked with doing just that and initially I found it difficult to be enthusiastic about the opportunity. Are you feeling the same?

So many graduates are finding it harder to secure paid jobs in their chosen field, with many of my former media classmates instead going back to their part-time jobs. For many this comes down to lack of experience, but how do you gain experience without having any prior? The age-old question.

Not many graduates can afford to work for free, but for those like me who can undertake an unpaid work experience it is important to treat it as an opportunity and not an obligation.

Here are 5 handy tips to keep your head high during a work placement after your degree:

5 top tips for making the most of your work experience

1) Interview

As hard as it is, treat an interview as you would a paid opportunity. Come prepared to answer questions and do some research on the company. This is a good almost risk-free way of getting interview practice before those bigger scarier paid positions. So don’t take this opportunity lightly.

2) The Right Company

Find a company you could see yourself working for, even if they aren’t currently hiring. The opportunity to meet and network with people is invaluable. Who knows, you may even connect again at a later date. It can't hurt to have people that can help get your foot in the door.

3) End Goals

Remember every day that any work you do can contribute to your end goals. Add all relevant work experience you gain to your CV and LinkedIn account. The sooner the better, there's no harm having these additions noted.

4) Be Brave

Though relatives or friends may question why you’re working free, especially after already getting a degree. It is important to remember your decision is a brave one. Actively seeking relevant experience in your chosen field is a proactive way of using your degree, even If this is while looking for more permanent work.

5) Don't Beat Yourself Up

If you cannot afford to undertake a work experience at this time, don’t beat yourself up. On a personal note, I was only able to utilize this opportunity because i chose to continue on to master's study. Continued education has allowed me to conduct work experience alongside study with the help of student finance. Not everyone has this opportunity. It may be beneficial to partake in some shorter work experiences or sessions alongside other commitments where possible, but if right now you’re unable to do that’s completely fine too.
